for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkaI hear a lot of it on TV and stuff as background music, but not the good stuff.
my faveorite band would have to be The Slackers, but i also love Catch 22 and Streetlight manifesto

I love SKA!!!!! It's AMAZING!!!! It just has such an uplifting sound, but often with melancholy lyrics....an odd combination, but I love it. My favorite bands to skank to are: Reel Big Fish, sorry if you don't like them but they were my first real ska love, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, amazing just amazing, Streetlight Manifesto, great kinda put them in the same category as Catch 22 though...and Big D & The Kid's Table, awesome.

The only reason I lump SM with Catch is because they have a very similar sound because there are a few of the same members, like RBF and Friend or Foe. I like SM better, but I hold Catch in very high esteem.

Let's see, I'll list them:
-Friend or Foe (John Christianson and Arron Barrett's other band)
-Streetlight Manifesto
-Catch 22
-Big D & The Kid's Table
-Skankin' Pickle
-The Taj Motel Trio
-The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
-The Skatalites
-The Aquabats
That's about all I got for you, and those are the bands I like, so there are plenty more, you'll just have to find them on your own.

Ska is basic reggae right?Hm..Well it's not bad..I remember two songs in FFVII which feature ska music.I even remember the titles

''Underneath The Rotting Pizza',''Oppressed People''
Nobuo is a genius after all..
Bob Marley music =]
I like ''can you be loved'' ''no woman no cry'' and others..But this genre is not what I really listen to.Maybe during some wild day lawl. But I like the serene reprise of this music.Makes you think you're in Jamaika drinking juice

i've been looking for some good ska bands to listen to lately, i just didn't know who to look for. like a lot of people, i was introduced to ska with reel big fish and might mighty bosstones, but didnt' really get into them till the last year. they've become some of my all time favorite bands. if its not too much trouble, could you suggest a cd to start off with for some of these bands? something to look for to get into them.

Keasby Nights originally by Catch 22, re-made by Streetlight Manifesto. Great record, both bands did a great job, Thomas Kalnoky was the singer/guitarist on both versions, and he says the SM version is better. I think that musically, the SM version is better, but the Catch version has so much more youthful energy. It's for you to decide though.
Also, by Streetlight manifesto, Everything Went Numb is a great cd....umm.....Fury of the Aquabats by the aquabats was good too...and pretty much anything by Suburban Legends
OOOHHH!!! I forgot Operation Ivy!!! And if you can, get Friend or Foe by The Forces of Evil, aaron from RBF's other band.

thanks for actually suppling cds.usually i would read about a new band on wikipedia or some other sites and take a guess at what cd to start with. when people actually tell you whats a good one to start with it kinda helps you get an idea for what the band is.

First wave is boring , most of second wave was boring except maybe the Specials. Third wave was fantastic, Bands like Operation Ivy , Mustard Plug , Link 80 , The Suicide Machines , Goldfinger , Less then Jake , Mighty Mighty Bosstones are great. Punk Ska or Hardcore Ska is just great for the most part though there is one band I hate kinda lol. Streetlight Manifesto , all they're songs sound exactly the same and they sound too much like Buck O Nine or Catch 22. And I dislike sublime because theyre so over rated but whatever.

Umm....Streetlight Manifesto sounds like Catch-22 because Thomas Kalnoky, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter for Catch-22, formed SM after leaving Catch to go to college...In their second album SM redid Keasby Nights in a way that Kalnoky wanted to sound originally.

I absolutely love ska. Favorite bands include Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, The Aquabats!, and Sublime.
Personally, my favorite ska album is Keasbey Nights by Catch 22. Their first album, and the only one before Tom left. I can listen through the entire album and love every minute of it. I also enjoyed their 2nd album, Alone in a Crowd. After that though, they kind of weren't as good so I don't listen to anymore by them.
Streetlight Manifesto is also amazing, most likely due to Tom, lol, however I did not like the reworked version of Keasbey Nights they did; the horns just sounded terrible in my opinion. Their 2 other albums though, I love.
Reel Big Fish, I love their 2nd album(which is basically a re-recording of their first, minus a bunch of songs that didn't make the cut), Turn the Radio Off. I enjoy some random songs from other albums of theirs too, but not so much their albums in whole since Turn the Radio Off.
Mustard Plug, I like the albums Pray for Mojo and In Black and White, along with random songs from other albums; another good old ska band.
The Aquabats! are another ska band I love. Unfortunately, like most ska bands, they've tended to move away from actual ska. For a ska album by them, I love their first one, The Fury of the Aquabats!. I like their other stuff as well though, especially the song Waterslides! off their latest album, Charge!!. It's a VERY laid back ska song, and showed that they still know their roots =)
Sublime, I love their self entitled album, and 40oz to Freedom. They aren't always called ska, but they are, just really laid back, and with an original sound.
And there you have it!

I've only heard a handful of ska bands, and I've not really cared for either of them. There is the occasional alright song, but nothing too good.

the only famous ska band i know is "Reel big fish" any others i should know about?
NekoJess
Mar 26 2008, 09:23 AM
There aren't really any "famous" ska bands, lol. Most never acheive a notable position in pop culture even. As a friend of mine put it, ska is an underground kind of thing. The best ska bands you'll probably end up finding are local, or put their own CDs out, or are part of a very small indie record company.
Anyways, found a couple more goos ska bands, so I thought I'd share: The Planet Smashers, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Save Ferris(the first 2 albums).
Also, incase people are wondering, ska can be classified in "waves". 1st wave ska is most like regae, and was showing up around the 70's. Think american-ized regae. 2nd wave was in the 80's, and combined the previous 1st wave sound with brittish "two-tone" music. 3rd wave, was the 90's and up until now, and took previous forms of ska, and combined them with punk music. As a note, most, if not ALL of the bands listed in this thread are all 3rd wave ska.
That's it =)

I REALLY wanted to see the RBF/SM shows!! =C Lucky.
Also, I just found another band, "ORESKABAND". They are a Japanese, all-girl, ska band. I've downloaded their few CDs and I'm loving them so far =) Turns out that they were playing at the Warped Tour this year, but I didn't know who they were and I missed them =\
lol, but at least I saw RBF and got their autographs ^.^
